New Research Could Change How Lung Cancer is Treated
For nearly a hundred years, scientists have believed that lactate was a waste product of tumors, a process known as the Warburg effect. But a new discovery by scientists at the Children’s Medical Centre Research Institute at UT Southwestern has challenged this century-old theory.
New research shows that rather than just being a waste product, lactate also acts as fuel for tumor growth, proliferation and even metastases. The results, while preliminary, open new avenues for understanding how cancer develops, and possible new treatments.References
