For the last few years, foods like kale, goji berries and sauerkraut have held the spotlight as the most popular body-boosting superfoods. But for 2018, Whole Foods predict an entirely new health trend. Move over leafy greens; make space for the healing power of functional mushrooms, medicinal flowers and superfood powders. Mushrooms like reishi, lion’s mane and ordyceps are enjoying a resurgence in popularity, and are being incorporated into more and more health foods. Medicinal flowers like elderflower, rose and lavender are finding their way onto their shelves and into tonic elixirs thanks to their therapeutic properties. And superfood powder sales are predicted to keep on rising as an increasing number of us start adding them to our smoothies.

More exciting than that, we can also expect a meteoric increase in meat-like vegan proteins. According to the statistics, an unprecedented number of people are choosing to go vegan and vegetarian. In the United Kingdom alone, the number of vegans has increased 360% in a decade. In the United States, veganism has grown 500% since 2014. In Australia, the number of vegan products increased 92% in the last year. UK sales of plant-based foods are up 1500%. Because of this, companies the world over are diving head first into vegan technology, to bring us things like “bleeding” vegan burgers and “not sushi” tuna made from tomatoes, pulled pork made from jack fruit, and cruelty-free meats made in a laboratory.

So what can you do if you want to be on trend in 2018? Take trip to your nearest health food shop to browse the superfood aisle, and begin taking steps towards a meatless diet!
