Zumba Fitness, a sport known as a non-stop party, has become increasingly popular all around the world. It has recently spread to Qatar with the help of multiple Zumba instructors doing all kinds of dance moves to get people in shape.
Originating from Columbia, Zumba features Latin dance moves like the Merengue, Rumba, and Salsa. This music then transcends the moves and turns these Latin dance steps into a great aerobics and cardio training.
Zumba is said to have been invented by accident when the founder, Alberto “Beto” Perez, forgot his music tape for an aerobics class he was teaching, and ended up teaching it with the Latin songs he had in his car. The class was a hit and Zumba Fitness was born!

A new study led by researchers from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Department of Exercise and Sport Science, found that Zumba is a highly effective workout. “It’s a total-body exercise—a good, high-energy aerobic workout,” said Dr. John Porcari, Ph.D., “Zumba fitness is also good for strengthening core and improving flexibility because there are a lot of hip and midsection movements.”
The research concluded that the study subjects were burning an average of 369 calories per Zumba class, which is more than cardio kickboxing, step aerobics and power yoga.
According to 4-year long Zumba instructor Cabalida, ladies in her Zumba fitness and circuit training at Curves gym can burn 800 to 1000 calories in 30 minutes when they combine Zumba Fitness with hydraulic machines. “Based on your speed and range of motion, it can increase the calorie loss and work your entire body effectively,” she says.

Wafaa Mohammed is a university student who was first introduced to Zumba as a way to relieve stress. “I lost a ton of weight just from doing Zumba for 3 months, the fast movements get you to stop thinking about stress and problems and really focus on the moves and feeling good,” she says.
Zumba instructors study new material each month to keep up with the fast-paced dance party. They even go abroad to master new ways to tone and tighten the body through this fun workout. Then, they teach these new dance moves to their classes.
