Speaking multiple languages has been proven to protect the brain against cognitive decline and enhance cognitive reserve. Putting it simply, this means that regularly stretching your brain to work hard at conversing in other languages keeps it functioning optimally into old age. Studies published by the American Heart Association in their Stroke Journal in November[1] specifically looked at patients’ recovery after a stroke and found that bi-lingual patients were twice as likely to fully recover their mental abilities. Scientists also predict that the mental-exercising of the brain required by multiple languages can also protect against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. This is great news for the people of Qatar who typically speak at least two languages and often many more!
