Research from Cornell Food and Brand Lab has established a link between images of large portions and overeating. The findings, published in the Journal of Public Health Nutrition in March 2016, found that depiction of big portions on food packaging can cause consumers to overestimate the appropriate serving size. Using boxes of cake mix as an example, the study found that the depictions of cake amounted to nearly 135 percent more calories than the recommended service size. “These seemingly small elements of packaging can have a huge impact,” says co-author and director of the Food and Brand Lab Brian Wansink. Until food companies take notice of the advice and include a phrase to notify consumers that images are not of a typical serving, it’s up to you to manage your portion sizes.
